West Orange is a township of about 49,000 in Essex County, climbing the First and Second Watchung ridges west of Newark.
Essex County counted 1,719 Black residents in the 1800 federal census, and 1,521 of them were enslaved — nearly nine in ten. New Jersey then spent sixty years declining to finish what it had begun: the 1804 act freed nobody living, the 1846 act renamed the remaining enslaved as "apprentices" bound to their present owners, eighteen were still held in 1860, and the Legislature voted against the Thirteenth Amendment in March 1865 before ratifying it in January 1866 — after it was already the law of the land.
Essex County counted 1,719 Black residents in 1800, of whom 1,521 were enslaved. The county that would become the state's industrial and commercial centre built that position while holding people as property.
